As of lately, the Slovenian foregin minister expressed support to the USA for the war on Iraq. This fired massive reactions from the relatively pacifist people of Slovenia, for who the war on Iraq (or any country for that matter) is the last thing on their minds. It was suggested the foregin minister simply expressed his personal oppinion and Clearly not the one of all the rest of the Slovenian people. These suggestions went all the way up to the government where the response to the public was that, quote "Our supporting for the war in Iraq is our only chance to join the EU and NATO" unqote. Our government (position AND opposition) has been keeping up a long campaign over the recent months, to convince the people that joining NATO is a good idea (even very crude methods were used in this, including public threats), against any and all public interests. Luckily, a referendum was issued and due to the recent devolopments in Slovenia's foregin policy (which is supposed to be part of the campaign), public support for NATO is falling dramaticaly. As of recently, even the national television station (that the opposition supposed was controled by the government) displayed the recent devolopments as pathetic short-lived and short-minded kissass attempts of the government, completely unsupported by public oppinion. I suppose some public and media interest to the matter from the EU, especialy on the quoted matter, would help democracy in Slovenia out of it's current crashing state. P.S.: I guess we will send our government to Iraq on the next plane otherwise, because nobody else will want part in that stupid war.
