I think it is who you are pretty much from birth, but it's very deep. 

Me and my friend called this inner stuff "werewolf luck", because it appears to oneself as what great luck he had, while it was actualy his instinct guiding him to that. Of course by this I point out that that oneself has absolutely no idea of what he actualy is, atho it might be a bit obvios to him that he is diffirent.

It's much like with any other animal, we werebeasts are nothing special. A dog might not know it is a dog from birth and as a matter of fact, a human might not either.

BTW, it's later probably that "werewolf luck" that gets one into the community, for example AHWW. :D I have seen quite a bunch of such cases.
