I have decided to pick off where I left things for schooly reasons before, so I am resuming work on the multimedia exchange for ICI (PicFind) and simmilar tasks. I have been doing some debugging and designing new small programs in such a way that they will be usable to other ICI software as well, besides the immediate uses (for example, the current databank search engine, which will scan a databank for a keyword is intended to be used with the multimedia exchange program, but also usable to for example my basic NLU program, which is also keyword-based). I have been working with the microsoft kind of private network (there is said to be also VPN support, but I have never seen it working, not to meniton it doesn't use encryption at all, etc) and was wondering how to get ICI to include all of the capability that system provides. The microsoft network has relatively good and immediate file sharing programs, which allow any remote drive to be factualy used as if they were local. I intend changing AFTP to give it a more casual look in order to reach that level, it will actualy not be the same because it won't be incorporated into the OS, but it will provide everything obvious to the causal user (drag&drop copying, double-click to open capability, etc). The other thing the microsoft networks provide is network access to printers. This is something I conclude could be done from within ICSA and I have the idea that the user could choose the option to print to a file, then the ICSA would transport that file to where the Console tells it to and feed it into the printer there somehow; this way all the support for graphics printing, etc, will be taken care off. The other services provided by this microsoft network are seriously poor quality and I don't expect anyone was supposed to know how to set them up, let allone be using them. > Today I had a wireless Internet person check out > the new location, and after finding out what was involved found another > wireless company to make things easier. Well looking forward to getting the ICI server back up, I expect by then the multimedia exchange program will be finnished and we will be able to test it. The program itself is a very nice one and will provide the abbility to publish actual files of media clips or documentation (text) over the ICI network, as well as let the users enter catalogues (entries without download links) of books they have at home and so on. The current search engine is small, simple, searches wide and seems to be awesomely fast as well. The user interface is very graphical and does not have a casual look of an application, but more of a web-page or an interactive multimedia presentation. Entry of items into the databanks can be done trough drag&drop (simply select a file allong with a screenshot and it's documentation, drop it into the window and you're done enterting). All works on the program are proceeding without problems, note asside that the coding IS hard by my standards. > I was also looking at 3D (3DML) web sites using the Rover download > from > > http://www.flatland.com/ > > I have not yet got it running on Win98. It keeps hanging IE. The IE variety works on an ActiveX control, which is a DLL or OCX that requires to be entered into the Windows registry or will cause the program using it to crash. Tell me if you need to know how to enter a file into the registry, I'll look it up, the explanation is part of the Visual Basic help files (because in VB, all DLLs are ActiveX).
