I asked a question on this topic on this newsgroup a while ago and the answers were just about talent and sample quality. In the time being I learned a bit more about tracking and I can say: YA, WRIGHT! So, newbies, listen up: If you want to make good tracks you have to use templates: For example, for common style trax (actualy what is called POP in tracking, but ignore above discussion about POP) use: * A standard 4/4 beat troughout the track * Additional more or less chaotic beat combinations that repeat a lot. * 3 2-channel basslines that must have a little variation in them and should be repeating as patterns repeat * A 4 to 6 channel theme that changes troughout the track * Add a 15 second intro and an ending that is allike the intro * Extras This will make the track give the right feel, the rest is your work of course. There is not as much talent in those legendary tracks, you can make simmilar quality, if only you follow the same template. Need I add a template describtion for an orchestral song? Something allong these lines: * A quiet 4/4 beat (more of a tick than a beat) * 4 to 6 channel piano line. Spread the notes along the channels every new note to the next channel. * 6 to 8 channel violin line that follows the piano line on every bit more radical note. Spread the violin line to more channels by adding duplicates that are an octave higher or lower. Also spread the notes along the channels every new note to the next block of channels. * Extras There are others in this one of course, but in general, the Extras make the track more unique.
